landlord & tenant update

In addition to the State and County ordinances, East Palo Alto has issued additional residential tenant protections.

Landlords may not charge late fees for unpaid rent. Moreover, Landlords can seek payment of any outstanding rent after termination of the State of Emergency, and tenants must remain current on any rent due after termination of the State of Emergency. Certain protected tenants as defined by the City have within 180 days of the termination of the State of Emergency or within 180 days of their actual displacement by execution of an unlawful detainer judgement, whichever is later, to pay any unpaid rent that is delayed in payment. Violation of this ordinance is a misdemeanor.
